A man standing on a boat looking out at the ocean

My father, Eppie Bogerd, in the Navy during the war

My father died when I was 5 years old and I heard a lot of memories about him as a Captain in the English Navy during World War II. There would be a very large boat in the center carrying Jewish people to the United States and he would be in one of the smaller boats surrounding the main boat, protecting it from the Nazis. He spent 5 years on the water during the war. He started sailing when he was about 14 years old and spent a lot of his life on the ocean. When I remember my father, I often think about him with water.
