Gurnaw, a childhood memory in the Chesapeake Bay
My memory of water is in the Chesapeake Bay on the eastern shore of Maryland. And growing up, me and my siblings would play this game called Gurnaw. And the premise of Gurnaw was that there was one human standing on the shore and then the other three of us would be whales trying to beach ourselves all the while screaming “GURNAW!”. And the one person who was on the shore would be tasked with rolling all of us whales back out to sea. And I remember the smooth stones and sand on my stomach and the briny water of the Chesapeake Bay rolling against my body. And I remember it being hot and sunny, but feeling cool in the water. and feeling such a sense of whimsy and joy at playing this game over and over and over, all throughout the summers of my childhood.
